Description: In the lunar calendar, shivarathri is the day before the amavasya or new moon of every month. On this day the planetary positions are such that there is a natural upsurge of energies in the human system in the northern hemisphere of the planet. Therfore, it is very beneficial to keep one's spine in a vertical position. It is for this reason that in the tradition one is advised not to sleep throughout the night. The Shivarathri during the month of Magha (Feb-March) is particularly powerful among the twelve Shivarathris of the year and is known as Mahashivarathri. In the yogic tradition, Shiva is considered not as a God but as the Adi Guru - the first Guru, and this night is specially chosen to celebrate the Grace of the Guru.
