Now 'Thavasi' comes as the title of a film in which the actor plays a dual role, that of father and son. While Jayasudha is paired with the senior Vijaykant, Soudarya plays the romantic interest of the 'son'.
Produced by V. Gnyanavel and V. Jaiprakash for their banner - G.J. Cinema, 'Thavasi' is directed by Uday Shankar based on a story written by Chinni Krisna. Uday Shankar had earlier directed the Venkatesh – Simran starrer in Telugu ' Kalisundan Rao' . The film had earned the National award for the best Telugu category. This is his debut Tamil film. Cinematography is by S.K. Bhoopathy, stunts by Super Subbarayan, artwork is by Mani Raju and music is by Vidyasagar.
Shooting commenced at Chennai and continued in Pollachi. Some of the scenes are planned to be shot at locations in Canada and America. A sugarcane field at Pollachi was the venue for a stunt sequence shot on Vijaykant and Ponnambalam. Bhoopathy is the son of the village landlord Thavasi. He returns to the village after getting his degree in agriculture. While the villagers hold the father and son in high respect, the only discordant note is struck by Perumal, a rival landlord who has an ongoing feud with them. Once Bhoopathy, while walking around the village, hears a woman scream for help. He runs to her rescue and finds Perumal molesting a farmhand. A furious Bhoopathy chases him and gives him the thrashing of his life. While Vijaykant plays both Thavasi and Bhoopathy, Perumal is being played by Ponnambalam. Super Subbarayan choreographed the stunts, while S.K. Bhoopathy cranked the camera.
The supporting cast has Vadivelu, Ponnambalam, Santhana Bharathi, Thyagu, Kaka Radhakrishnan, Nizhalgal Ravi, and C.R. Saraswathi. Jeeva, a villain in Telugu films, makes his debut in Tamil in a negative role.
