Description
Krishna is a deity worshiped across many traditions of Hinduism. Krishna is often described as having the appearance of a dark-skinned man during his earthly incarnation, often depicted as a young cowherd boy playing a flute (as in the Bhagavata Purana) or a youthful prince giving philosophical direction and guidance (as in the Bhagavad Gita).
Brass sculpture of Krishna comes from norther part of India. Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Shravan (August September). According to most Hindus, He is the God himself, the Supreme Being. The great exponent of the Gita, Krishna is the ninth and the complete incarnate of Lord Vishnu. The birth of Krishna is a transcendental phenomenon that generates awe among the Hindus and overwhelms all with its super natural events. When Devaki gave birth to her first child, her brother, the evil king Kamsa came to the prison cell and slaughtered the newborn. This way, he killed the first six sons of his sister one after the other. Suddenly Lord Vishnu appeared before them and said he himself was coming to rescue them and the people of Mathura. Vishnu assured them that nothing shall bar your path. At midnight on ashtami, the divine baby was born in the prison. Remembering Vishnus instructions, Vasudeva, Devakis husband clasped the child to his bosom and started for Gokul. His legs were in chains. He jerked his legs and he was free. The massive iron doors unlocked and opened up. While crossing river Yamuna, Vasudeva held his baby high over his head. The rain fell in torrents and the river was in spate. However, the water made way for Vasudeva and a mighty five headed snake followed him from behind and provided cover over the baby with its hood.
