Sparky script, great performances, directorial flare, and play's essential revelation makes "Englishkaran" an admirable movie. The film gets its humor from spoofing and parodying and offers wholesome entertainment value whatsoever.
Actor Sathyaraj and director Shakthi Chidambaram are teaming up once again after their successful "Maha Nadigan". The new movie is produced under the banner Seven Hills Film Factory.
Sandhya (Madhumitha), a college student in a village aspires to become a popular singer. Though the entire village appreciates her voice, her father ("Kadhal" Thandapani), a dogmatic character, driven by his belief that women are fit only to be good housekeepers, plays a spoke in the wheel of Sandhya's career growth.
Thamizarasu (Sathyaraj) comes to Sandhya's house as a guest and pretends to love her. But Sandhya opens her heart to Siva (Siva Balaji).
Meanwhile, Sandhya's father arranges to get her married to a local rowdy who is the son of Akilandeswari (Ishwarya) the MLA of the village. To escape from this forceful marriage, Sandhya and Sathya elope with the help of Thamizarasu.
Thamizarasu helps Sandhya become a popular singer. Not withstanding the disappointment, the local rowdy comes in search of Sandhya only to bump her off. Thamizarasu once again helps her from the rowdy and successfully gets her married to Siva.
Who is Thamizarasu? Why he pretended to love Sandhya? Why he helped Sathya to attain her goal? Following story unravels the answer in a flash back.
Sathyaraj has given a wacky performance. His parodying as Sibi, his own son and Ravi Krishna is humorous. His spoofing on movie scenes and mimicking film stars makes the movie's first half racy. It's Sathyaraj's energetic performance that dominates and drives the whole film.
Vadivelu is sparkling in every frame. The highlight comedy of the movie is the Sathyaraj-Vadivelu combo enacting as "Chandramukhi". Its hilarious humor is thrust right down your cakehole.
The elemental presence of Madhumitha in the first half, and luscious Namitha in the second half provide the oomph factor. Their laconic chemistry with Sathyaraj is perfect.
Ishwarya and "Kadhal" Thandapani as a villain has given a strong performance. An ensemble of other resilient characters: Santhanam, Chaplin Balu, Bondamani. Lakshmanan, Velmurugan have together added weight to the comic scenes.
Music director Deva plays to the gallery. Apart from direction, Shakthi Chidambaram has penned the story and screenplay. He has conveyed his point -Parents should not thrust their own plans and interests on their children- eloquently through his well-crafted story.
This is most definitely a comedy, and a pretty good one.
