Director Bharathan has used the yet unproven theory of ESP (extrasensory perception) to make a movie with one of the top stars, Vijay, in the lead. He plays a dual role - one as the hero and the other as the villain. It is a war of nervous between the two characters with hapless Shreya being caught in the middle. Bharathan has presented the film in a package too heavy with romance, action and drama.
Here goes the story...
Guru (Vijay,) an athlete and business management student, meets Abhinaya (Shreya) who is the daughter of a business magnate (Ashish Vidyarthi) in Chennai and they fall in love with each other. They succeed in their efforts to get their parents' nod for the marriage. As their romance is blossoming, Guru is possessed by the ESP phenomenon and he starts visualizing scenes of weird incidents. After some incidents took place in real life, he comes to believe in whatever he visualizes.
A psychiatrist (Dr. Rudran, a professional psychiatrist) confirms that ESP is the cause of Guru's bizarre mental state and that what he visualizes would come true some day. A traumatized Guru senses that his sweetheart Abhi would come to harm. In order to save her from what he perceives as a danger, he goes away to Mumbai where he comes across a stranger who resembles him. This increases his fears about Abhi's life. Before he could track him down, Guru is involved in an accident. His look-alike (played by Vijay), named Prasad, shifts to Chennai where he is mistaken for Guru by Abhi. She takes him home.
Prasad, who is greedy and unscrupulous, turns an impersonator and plans to marry her and become rich. He is halted in the track when the real Guru returns from Mumbai, but no one is prepared to believe him. He is outsmarted by cunning Prasad and defeated in his every move to prove himself. How Guru ultimately emerges triumphant is portrayed with plenty of action, turns and twists.
The term ESP has gained currency, but like UFO, it is only talked about. Director Bharathan has ingenuously crafted the film making it appear that ESP is a reality which one can experience.
Vijay played both the characters, Guru and Prasad, with consummate skill and contrasting styles. Pitting Vijay against Vijay is thoughtful.
