Arunachalam Year of Release : 1997 Cast : Rajinikanth, Ramba,, Soundarya, Jaisankar, Music : Deva Direction : C Sundar Producer : Rajnikanth Dialogue : Crazy Moha Rajni plays the title role of Arunachalam, eldest of the three sons of a rich and respected family in a village. Arunachalam and his "muraiponnu" Vethavalli(played by Soundarya) fall in love, when the later visits the village to attend Arunachalam's sister's wedding. In the beginning, Vethavalli mistakes Senthil as Arunachalam and the following scenes are funny, though the comedy due to mistaken identity may not be new to Tamil movies. Everything seems to go well, until Arunachalam finds out the truth about his birth. Now, has anyone else noticed that lately, in very few Rajni movies, Rajni's character is fortunate enough to have both parents living well and healthy. Only when Arunachalam goes to Chennai his life takes another turn, but this time for good things. He learns about his real parents and then the story shifts to another gear. I heard that the second half of the movie was based on a Hollywood movie. Anyway that part of the story is novel to Tamil movies and in my opinion well adapted. The entire second half on the picture is devoted to how Arunachalam along with Janagaraj and Ramba saves all his real father's hard earned wealth from the villain gang(including Nizhalgal Ravi, Raghuvaran and V.K. Ramasamy). And this sets up a very good premise for the director and dialogue writer to work with comedy, emotion, stunts, side plots etc. The movie includes a handful of oldtime actors and actresses. I need not mention their acting ability as everybody has delivered more than what was required. Both Ramba and Soundarya look beautiful and act well. Crazy Mohan's dialogues bring out a lot of laughter as usual. Director Sundar has done his job well and is able to tell the story without confusion. But I must mention that music by Deva is very disappointing. n general, the second half of the movie saves the movie from the very conventional Rajni movie's first half routine and very well plays a major role in the success of the movie. I would recommend this picture to anyone, if you don't mind putting up with some masala. Arul Tamil DVD Aruvadai Naal Tamil DVD
